Top 12 Christmas Classics

Every year since having my little one I've been adding new Christmas books to our collection. They come out on the 1st of December and go back into the attic on the 31st with the decorations. We've got quite a decent collection so far and I LOVE THEM!!! So, I thought I'd share my favourites with you all. There are 12 in the list which is perfect if you are doing a book Advent Calendar this year! So if you're just starting your Christmas book collection or just want to add some new ones to what you have already, these are my picks!

The big question is....who will top the list at number 1!

12: The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit

I'm sure every child has a timeless Peter Rabbit book on their book shelves. And with the success of the cartoon (is anyone else's child in love with the cartoon??! Just mine?) he's having a massive revival. The Christmas Tale of Peter Rabbit is a special one as it's written by none other than actress Emma Thompson, it features Peter, his comical little cousin Benjamin Bunny and a certain feathered friend called William.

11: Paddington and the Christmas Surprise

Well, after the release of the M&S Christmas commercial and his new film Paddington 2, this little bear is everywhere this year! When the Browns take Paddington to the Christmas grotto at the local department store, their journey through the Winter Wonderland is full of unexpected surprises. But the best surprise is a present from Santa. After all, who else would find the perfect present for a bear like Paddington?

10: A Christmas Advent Story

Follow the story of a little girl, boy and their dog on their countdown to Christmas Day. Along the way you'll find 25 flaps (one for every day of advent), each introducing a new word in this magical Christmas book. Sing carols in a busy square, watch ballerinas spin and twirl, bake Christmas cookies, look out for reindeer and pick the perfect tree…What will you see? A fantastic Christmas gift.

9: Dear Father Christmas

Celebrate Christmas with this delightful book full of lift-the-flap letters from Father Christmas and a special surprise gift. When Holly sees a man who looks like Father Christmas, she decides to write him a letter: "Dear Father Christmas - is it snowing in Lapland? Please answer. Love Holly." And so begins the start of a touching penpal friendship with Father Christmas himself in which Holly learns about the magic of elves, reindeer and life in Lapland, as well as getting some very special Christmas surprises.

8: The Christmas Fairy

A personal favourite for my little one! The Christmas Fairy tells the story of Clara who is so eager to be a sensible 'proper fairy' like the other fairies in her class but she is too full of life to keep still and that's just what Father Christmas is looking for. A great story reminding little ones that it's ok to be different and to be true to themselves.

7: Twas the night before Christmas

It would be impossible to have a Christmas Classic book list and not have 'Twas the night Before Christmas. First published in 1823, the poem by Clement C Moore has become a Christmas Eve tradition for families worldwide.

6: Belle & Boo and the Very Merry Christmas

Ahh...Belle, officially the most stylish little girl in the land of children's books. This sweet story tells the story of Belle and her little bunny friend Boo and how they prepare for Christmas. It's almost Christmas Day. Time to decorate the tree, hang up stockings and bake delicious treats. Boo the bunny thinks the best thing about Christmas is the presents waiting for him under the tree. But, with a little help from his friend Belle, Boo learns that kindness and sharing will make for the merriest Christmas of all. A charming story with beautiful vintage inspired illustrations.

5: The Story Orchestra presents: The Nutcracker

This newly released version of The Nutcracker really is something special. The Story Orchestra tells the classic story of The Nutcracker but what separates them from all of the other versions is that you are able to listen to Tchaikovsky's music throughout by pressing the note on the pages! It really is breathtaking. A magical interactive book that you and your children will love!

4: Alfie's Christmas

There is something so beautifully simple about the Shirley Hughes books. Children will love being able to relate to all the things Alfie gets up to in the lead up to Christmas from the school Nativity to hand making decorations.

3: Stick Man

We fell in love with Stick Man the first time we read it, then we went to see it at the theatre (review here) and fell in love with it even more. Will Stick Man ever be able to get back to his family tree?

2: The Jolly Christmas Postman

It's crazy to think that this Christmas Classic is 26 years old! No matter how many times your little one reads this, the novelty of pulling out those letters on each page does not wear off, even I'm excited to get this one down from the attic! Join the Jolly Postman on Christmas Eve as he delivers greetings to a whole host of fairy-tale favourites from Baby Bear to Humpty Dumpty.

1: The Untold Story of Father Christmas

Which means our number 1 spot goes to: The Untold Story of Father Christmas. A new release written by Alison and Mike Battle, the founders of LaplandUK, this book was bound to be something special. Have you ever wondered where Father Christmas came from? And how he ended up with a factory at the North Pole full of elves to help him make toys?
